Enough people complained about the jumping out of gear problem which wventually resulted in TSBs which seemed to help. My first jeep, a CJ7 sometimes grinds going into reverse.

I have been driving manual transmissions from the beginning more than 20 years ago. I too use the shift to first to get reverse method. I still have trouble getting it into reverse.
